Business insurance can be expensive, especially for smaller companies, but before you try to cut corners and save a few bucks on your insurance coverage you may want to consider the potential risks of not having adequate coverage. Here we will explain why business insurance is vital for any type and size of business, including some information on which types of insurance are mandatory and how to calculate how much additional insurance you’ll need to be protected should the unfortunate occur.
The question, “Do I have enough insurance coverage?” is one that is regrettably never dealt with until the unfortunate happens, and by that time, of course, it is too late to do anything about it. Businesses choosing to “roll the dice” when it comes to insurance coverage, which is to say businesses that carry only the bare minimum required by law, could wind up losing not only their business, but their home and their life savings as well. Fortunately, a fate such as this is completely avoidable with the right type of insurance coverage.
All businesses, large and small, are required to carry at least some type of business insurance. If your business has at least one employee, for example, you are required to carry workers compensation insurance. In addition, depending on the state in which you live, you will be required to carry at least some form of liability insurance, although the limits to these policies will vary from state to state. These mandatory insurance limits will protect you should an employee or third party become injured, but they are not enough to protect you personally from any losses you may incur.
To calculate just how much insurance you’ll need to be protected, you should meet with an insurance professional who can give you a risk management assessment. Through this process, you can define the potential risks your business faces during operation, outline the potential financial impact each of these risks poses and determine the amount of insurance coverage needed to fully protect yourself.
When it comes to business insurance the question isn’t, “do I need insurance?” This should be a “no brainer” and very easy to figure out, but you do want to consider just how much insurance you’ll need to be completely protected. To do this, check with your local insurance professional and ask for a risk assessment for your business. This step alone can possibly save you hundreds of dollars in premiums now, and thousands down the road should something unfortunate occur.
