Get Kinected

What with the release of Sony’s Playstation Move in September and Microsoft’s Kinect shortly afterwards in November, it seems that motion sensing control is going to be the next big thing in video gaming. Having moved (see what I did there?) beyond the realm of the humble light gun and Eyetoy, how exactly do the creations of these gaming behemoths compare to that of the Nintendo Wii?

The Playstation Move’s slogan is “It only does everything”, and in a way this seems largely true as it very accurately tracks the player’s every movement as well as providing feedback in the form of both vibration and visuals. The latter means that the controller can, by changing the colour of its sphere, imitate something as explosive as the muzzle flash of a gun to as peaceful as paint on a paintbrush. If you want even more advanced in-game control an additional navigation controller can also be purchased (this is optional but highly recommended); it is also rechargeable like the other. With a variety of Playstation-Move compatible games already available and more in the works, it looks like Sony’s new peripheral is here to stay.

The Xbox Kinect has no controller, per se, as you control compatible games with your own movements and gestures! The Kinect is essentially a very advanced webcam that is able to recognise your face, gestures and voice, and as such aims to bring the Xbox 360 to a wider audience. Able to track up to six people at once and supporting headset-free party chat over Xbox Live, the Kinect certainly looks to be an interesting addition to the Xbox 360′s repertoire, and what with over one thousand software development kits having been shipped to game developers on the day of its initial announcement there are already a load of new Kinect-compatible games on the way.

But the killer question is, of course, this: Move or Kinect? Over to you!
