Youngsters today are fascinated by the world of video gaming and they are getting up and moving around to play them. The systems are high on many people’s Christmas wish list. But can these games help kids lose weight and get fit? Is it the same as if they participate in more traditional activities? New generations of active computer game systems like the xbox 360 kinect stimulate greater energy expenditure than sedentary games, but they are no substitute for playing real sports, yet the younger generation seems to be turning to them more and more every day.
Can these games keep kids fit? What matters is what a parents expectations are. Nearly one quarter of our kids time that they are awake is spent in front of the TV. When watching television the amount of physical activity is minimal. Research has shown that every child should get at least sixty minutes of activity on a daily basis to keep themselves in shape. So, any game that gets kids up and moving is a good thing. Kids who play these games are burning calories. It would be better if a child is able to get outside and play instead of depending on these video games..
Researchers say energy used during interactive games was much lower than during the real sports, such as bowling, tennis and boxing and have found that using something like the Wii system or the new Microsoft kinect system was not intense enough. They feel that they do not really make a difference toward achieving the daily recommended amount of physical activity for children.
What is the real difference between real exercises and using one of these gaming systems? Interactive bowling used 168 calories in an hour, while bowling at the bowling alley used 192 calories per hour. So there is a difference. But if a person is to choose between doing nothing and playing a video game they will get a lot more return on the investment they made for the xbox 360 kinect price when they turn on the television and get up off the sofa to interact with it.
There been other studies showing that kids do lose weight using these games. Plenty has been written that shows how effective a fitness program video game can be for children. It is hard to deny the facts. Because of the motion that is required for many of these interactive platforms, children will use double the amount of energy. It is hard to deny the evidence. Youngsters have successfully shed the fat playing on these platforms. Most of the time they do not realize that they are exercising. They are having too much fun playing the game.
Playing on these platforms does not have to be a solo adventure. The games are one method that parents can use to entertain several children at a time. If they can not find friends in the neighborhood, they can find a partner on line. Playing these games are not just for a single person.
How can parents make sure their children are getting the exercise they need? Get them off the couch. A game that gets a kid moving and jumping around could be used when it is not feasible to run around outdoors. Any movement is helpful. That does not mean a person should stop trying to do any of the more traditional physical activities that they can. There is no replacement for the real thing.
